African Leaders Advocate for Enhanced Malaria Financing and Multisectoral Collaboration

During a high-level event at the UN General Assembly, African leaders called for increased domestic financing and multisectoral efforts to combat malaria. The session, led by Botswana's President Duma Gideon Boko, aimed to address the stalled progress in malaria elimination due to financial and resource constraints. Currently, Africa faces severe malaria impacts, accounting for the majority of global cases and deaths. Recent shortfalls in global funding amplify the risk of disease resurgence, potentially resulting in millions of additional cases and significant economic losses by 2030.

Speakers emphasized the necessity of integrating malaria financing into national budgets and development plans, urging international partners for consistent support. The establishment of End Malaria Councils was highlighted as a successful model for promoting collaboration and securing resources. African leaders also encouraged the inclusion of malaria initiatives in World Bank health compacts and called for a dedicated Malaria Booster Programme.

Commitments from various sectors, including cross-border cooperation and local innovation in manufacturing and research, were made. Stakeholders, from the Global Fund to the Gates Foundation, reinforced their support, advocating a shared responsibility in malaria elimination. The event echoed a unified call to action, promoting sustained political commitment and global partnerships to eradicate malaria by aligning with the African Union's health development goals.
