Alstom and TransPennine Express have inked €1.2 billion worth contracts for the UK's first mainline battery-electric trains to bolster the Transpennine Route Upgrade. The deal involves a €930 million order for battery-electric multiple units complemented by €230 million maintenance agreements. Delivery of the fleet is set for 2032.

Designed for long-distance travel, these trains—120 meters long—promise faster and more comfortable journeys in Northern England. Features include modern amenities like Wi-Fi, USB-C charging, real-time information systems, and dedicated storage spaces. Importantly, the level boarding design enhances accessibility.

The project is poised to support over 350 jobs in Derby and engage Alstom's extensive UK supply chain, fostering economic growth. Additionally, a new charging infrastructure will facilitate emission-free operations on non-electrified routes.

This partnership aims to replace outdated diesel units, positively impacting passenger experience, journey times, and environmental sustainability. The battery-powered trains underscore Alstom’s commitment to advancing sustainable rail mobility, cementing the UK’s role in next-generation rail technology.
