Angolan President Named 'Energy Person of the Year'

President João Lourenço of Angola has been honored as the 'Energy Person of the Year' by the African Energy Chamber. The award acknowledges his contributions to reforming Angola's oil and gas sector through improved governance and anti-corruption efforts. Since his 2017 election, Lourenço has sought to revitalize the sector, resulting in renewed investment and stabilization of oil production, now targeted to exceed one million barrels per day until 2027.

Under Lourenço's leadership, Angola has introduced flexible investment options and privatised Sonangol, boosting transparency and investment. The nation anticipates a $60 billion investment surge in its energy sector over five years, with significant projects like Azule Energy's Agogo Integrated West Hub and TotalEnergies' Kaminho development.

Lourenço's vision extends beyond oil, targeting green energy and natural gas as growth catalysts. Notably, Angola will expand its refining capacity to address domestic demands with projects like the Cabinda refinery. These efforts highlight his inclusive approach, positioning Angola as a regional energy powerhouse.
