Borkum Riffgrund 3 Begins Operations, Enhancing Germany's Renewable Energy
Ørsted A/S and Nuveen Infrastructure's Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm has commenced commercial operations. With a capacity of 913 MW, it is among Germany’s largest, symbolizing a significant step in the country’s transition to renewable energy. This development enhances Germany’s energy security by providing reliable, domestic electricity.
The project is part of Ørsted’s 8.1 GW construction program. Borkum Riffgrund 3 supports industrial and technological sectors through long-term power purchase agreements, contributing to the decarbonization of the German economy. Partners include Amazon, BASF, Covestro, and Google.
Located in the German North Sea, the farm covers 75 km² with 83 turbines of 11 MW each. The project engages a wide European supply chain, employing German, Danish, French, Dutch, and Belgian resources. Ørsted’s capacity now totals around 2.5 GW in Germany, powering 2.5 million homes.
