ASEAN Cement Industry Launches 2035 Decarbonization Roadmap
The ASEAN Federation of Cement Manufacturers (AFCM) has unveiled the 2035 AFCM Decarbonization Roadmap, the first-ever regional strategy for reducing carbon emissions in the cement sector. Announced during the 46th AFCM Council Meeting in Brunei, the roadmap aligns with global environmental goals. Cement production is crucial to ASEAN's infrastructure but remains a significant CO₂ emitter.
The roadmap includes four key strategies: expanding low-carbon cement, transitioning to clean energy, deploying carbon capture and storage technologies, and developing supplementary materials. This collective initiative could cut up to 38 million tons of CO₂ by 2035. The phased reduction of Ordinary Portland Cement offers immediate emission reductions.
While the roadmap sets a unified vision, implementation will vary by country, tailored to local regulatory and industrial conditions. Member countries emphasize the need for collaborative policies and advanced technologies to boost regional competitiveness and sustainable development.
