The Swiss car market is at its lowest point due to CO2 regulations
In 2025, the Swiss car market reached its lowest level in over 25 years, with 233,737 new registrations, influenced by strict CO2 regulations. This 2.4% drop compared to the previous year contrasts sharply with the gradual recovery of the European market. Switzerland therefore continues to lag behind, particularly with its target of 50% rechargeable vehicles, which remains out of reach despite the availability of over 300 electric models.
The president of Auto-schweiz, Peter Grünenfelder, attributes this decline to a strict climate policy, calling for alignment with market realities and the removal of dissuasive financial penalties. As a result, registrations of internal combustion engine vehicles such as diesel and gasoline vehicles have fallen by 30% and 20% respectively.
Finally, director Thomas Rücker underlines the importance of a policy that supports electric mobility, while calling for lower electricity prices and better public charging infrastructure to accelerate the transition.
