Michael Sandel Awarded $1 Million Berggruen Philosophy Prize

On October 14, 2025, the Berggruen Institute honored renowned political philosopher Michael Sandel with the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy & Culture. This prestigious $1 million award is given to individuals whose ideas shape human understanding in an evolving world. Sandel is celebrated for his impact on justice, ethics, markets, and democracy discourse.

Yuk Hui, Chair of the Berggruen Prize Jury, noted Sandel's critiques of neoliberalism and meritocracy as addressing pressing contemporary issues. A Harvard University professor, his course "Justice" reached millions globally. Sandel's acclaimed books include "Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?" and "The Tyranny of Merit".

Nicolas Berggruen, Institute Chairman, highlighted Sandel's contributions to global intellectual thought. Selected from hundreds of nominees, Sandel joins past laureates like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Martha Nussbaum. The prize ceremony will take place in Cambridge, MA, in spring 2026.
