Blue Elephant Energy to Supply Deutsche Bahn with Solar Power by 2027
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has signed two long-term power purchase agreements with Blue Elephant Energy GmbH (BEE) for 2.5 terawatt hours of solar power. The energy will be generated by two new solar parks in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, scheduled to start operations by mid-2027. These projects will assist DB in meeting the energy demands for around 14 million ICE train kilometers annually.
The Schafhöfen solar park, with an installed capacity of 266 MWp, will become Germany’s second-largest solar park. It will use 370,000 solar modules spread across 300 soccer fields. The Aulendorf solar park will provide a capacity of 53 MWp. Both parks will incorporate battery storage to enhance power supply reliability.
DB Energie's Managing Director Florian Reuter stated the agreements will aid in DB's goal to become climate-neutral by 2040, using the most cost-effective solar power and battery storage technologies.
