Car sales stagnate in Switzerland
In May 2026, the Swiss car market remained stable with 91,341 new registrations since the beginning of the year. This stability highlights the impact of over-regulation on the market. Indeed, despite political ambitions, the market remains below European expectations.
Only electric vehicles showed growth, accounting for 35.4% of new registrations. Battery electric cars increased by 15.5%, while plug-in hybrids saw a rise of 20.1%. However, sales of internal combustion engine vehicles continued to decline.
Thomas Rücker, director of auto-suisse, emphasizes the sector's disappointment with these figures. Although electric vehicles are progressing, they are not enough to meet emissions targets.
