China Aims to Make AI a Tool for Shared Prosperity Amid Global Divide
China is committed to leveraging artificial intelligence to promote shared prosperity, especially as the global AI divide widens. The country's advanced MAZU meteorological system is currently assisting Pakistan in managing extreme weather conditions during its monsoon season.
At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, President Xi Jinping emphasized a people-centered AI governance framework. China pledged to aid 30 countries in utilizing the MAZU system and to offer 5,000 AI training slots for developing nations over the next five years.
China is advocating for open-source AI models, like DeepSeek, known for their affordability and adaptability. These initiatives are aimed particularly at helping Global South countries enhance their technological capabilities.
To bridge the AI divide, China supports frameworks ensuring equitable technology access. The signing of a new international AI cooperation agreement in Shanghai marks progress in this global initiative.
