China's Path to Enhanced Fundamental Research

A recent report from China Daily highlights the strategic framework for strengthening fundamental research in China. Launched at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, this report was a collaborative effort mainly organized by Wuhan University.

The report emphasizes a shift in focus from merely evaluating research output volume to prioritizing knowledge utilization, capacity building, and resource sharing. It sets the stage for a new, continually updated monitoring system for research activities.

China's expenditure on fundamental research nearly doubled from $16.5 billion in 2018 to $31.9 billion in 2023, marking significant growth in investment. The country's share of global scientific publications surged from 0.9% in 1985 to 32.6% in 2024, indicating its strengthening role in global scientific knowledge production.

The report calls for international cooperation to enhance methodologies and expand cross-border research collaboration, focusing on transforming scale into systemic capacity and supporting long-term scientific exploration.
