Sirolimus-Coated Balloon Demonstrates Improved Results in Long-Term Trial

The SIRONA trial has shown promising results for patients with femoropopliteal artery disease. The trial compared the MagicTouch PTA sirolimus-coated balloon (SCB) with paclitaxel-coated balloons (PCB) over three years. Results indicate that the SCB provided better freedom from repeat revascularization.

The trial involved 482 patients and was carried out in 25 centers across Germany and Austria. It demonstrated that 88.2% of patients using the SCB were free from clinically driven target lesion revascularization (cdTLR) after three years, compared to 80.2% with PCB.

Both treatment groups saw improvements in patient-reported walking distance and quality of life. The safety profile was similar for both groups, with negligible differences in mortality and major amputation rates.

This finding is significant amidst ongoing scrutiny surrounding paclitaxel-coated devices. Although initial results are promising, longer follow-up is necessary to confirm these benefits.
