Greening Learning Spaces in Crisis Settings

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) has partnered with Save the Children, Arup, and the World Wildlife Fund to establish new standards for environmentally responsible temporary learning spaces. With a US$650,000 grant, this initiative addresses the need for sustainable education structures in crisis settings, as highlighted during COP30.

Temporary learning spaces are crucial in emergencies, such as refugee camps and flood zones. However, current structures often lack environmental and resilience guidelines, worsening conditions for affected children. This partnership combines Save the Children's rights expertise, Arup's technical skills, and WWF's environmental knowledge to create inclusive, sustainable learning environments.

Practical tools will be developed to guide the design, construction, and maintenance of these spaces, focusing on minimal impact and local adaptation. The initiative aims to support education in emergencies, aligning with global climate action goals.
