ENGIE and CMA CGM Partner for Biomethane Production in Le Havre
ENGIE and CMA CGM have signed an agreement to establish a biomethane production facility in Le Havre's industrial and port area. Engie's role includes developing, designing, and overseeing the construction and operation of the facility. From 2029, the plant is set to supply 7,000 tons of biomethane annually, cutting CO₂ emissions by 23,000 tons per year.
The facility will use livestock waste, household biowaste, and agricultural residues, also producing digestate for use as natural fertilizer, aiding local farmers. Also, 13,000 tons of biogenic CO₂ will be recovered for commercialization.
This partnership enhances CMA CGM's strategy to decarbonize its fleet by securing renewable fuel supplies while contributing to France's energy sovereignty. ENGIE aims to scale up its biomethane production to 10 TWh in Europe by 2035. The project reflects a strategic move toward lowering greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors.
