La Française de l'Énergie (FDE), a carbon negative energy producer, announced the launch of a new drilling campaign in Lorraine, France. The initiative aims to produce gas from local coal reserves and explore natural hydrogen deposits discovered in 2023. This project, starting in autumn 2025, follows strict safety and environmental regulations using established technologies.

With Lorraine's coal containing high methane levels, the certified reserves exceed 2.1 billion m³ of gas. The campaign includes drilling three wells with an initial budget of €15 million. The process avoids hydraulic fracturing, using natural cracks in coal seams and small-diameter drains for gas extraction.

The project's local gas production aims to reduce France's reliance on imported gas and lower carbon emissions. Additionally, the exploration of natural hydrogen offers potential environmental benefits and energy sovereignty for the region.
