Funding approved for the reconstruction of burned Cree camps in Quebec

The Cree Trappers Association, the Cree Hunters' Economic Security Board, and 16 mining companies announced the approval of funding for the reconstruction of camps burned by the 2023 wildfires in Eeyou Istchee James Bay. $750,000 has been allocated, including $400,000 from the OSECC and $200,000 from the companies. This initiative allows for the continuation of a project already underway in 2024.

In 2024, 50 camps were rebuilt through a collaboration between the Niskamoon Corporation, the Cree Nation Government, and other partners. Efforts will continue in 2025, with additional funding planned for 2026. This initiative, supported by the mining sector, aims to help Cree hunters resume their traditional activities in the affected territory.
