Global Study Highlights Inequities in Dermatological Care Access

A comprehensive study by the International League of Dermatological Societies and L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty reveals significant disparities in dermatological care across 158 countries. Published in JAMA Dermatology, the study shows an average of 2.66 dermatologists per 100,000 people, far below the required 5.63. This shortage is particularly acute in low-income countries, with figures dropping to 0.37 per 100,000.

Urban areas host 79% of dermatologists, creating underserved "dermatological deserts" in rural regions. The study also finds that skin health is not a priority for 74% of governments, despite over two billion people living with skin diseases.

Initiatives proposed include regional training programs and leveraging telemedicine to improve access. L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty supports these efforts through initiatives like the Act For Dermatology program.
