Heritage Adapts! Campaign Launches to Address Climate Risks

On June 4, 2026, the Heritage Adapts! campaign was launched in Washington, aiming to unite the heritage sector in addressing climate adaptation. The initiative targets at least 3,000 sites and practices for adaptation actions by 2030. Led by Preserving Legacies and supported by the National Geographic Society, the campaign intends to provide local stewards with the necessary tools to enhance community resilience.

UNESCO data indicates a 40% rise in climate-related hazards in heritage sites over the past decade, with over a quarter facing irreversible tipping points by 2050. Heritage Adapts!, comprised of over 100 global organizations, seeks to bridge the gap in climate finance and policy for heritage conservation. The campaign underscores heritage as both at risk and a source of community-strengthening solutions.

The platform, featuring a self-paced program, facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration among heritage stewards. As emphasized by stakeholders, culture and heritage remain vital in shaping community resilience and understanding climate risks.
