Hitachi Acquires Electrochaea's Green Gas Technology

In a significant development, Insolvency administrator Dr. jur. Michael Jaffé announced the sale of Electrochaea GmbH's global patent portfolio to Hitachi. This strategic move follows the insolvency proceedings initiated a month ago for the e-methane gas pioneer, Electrochaea. The transaction was approved in a creditors' meeting, allowing Hitachi to further develop and industrialize the promising power-to-gas technology.

Electrochaea, established in 2014, innovates by converting excess electricity from renewable sources into biomethane using specialized microorganisms. Despite achieving technological milestones and demonstration plants in several countries, cost-covering production eluded them, leading to insolvency after a failed financing round.

The acquisition by Hitachi, a major player in sustainable energy systems, is seen as a positive step towards advancing Electrochaea’s technology for industrial use. This transaction offers a promising path for climate-neutral energy solutions, despite the challenges faced by Electrochaea in scaling their operations.
