HMS Bergbau Expands into South Africa through Acquisition
HMS Bergbau AG has announced the acquisition of a 75% stake in South African mining company Hoshoza Resources Vryheid (Pty.) Ltd. The decision marks a significant move in broadening their value chain, particularly in the metallurgical coal sector. The acquisition, approved by South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, involves a mining license covering over 18,600 hectares in KwaZulu-Natal.
Plans to reactivate a closed coal mine in the license area are anticipated for Q2, 2026, with an initial extraction target of 200,000 tons annually. In the medium term, the operation aims for 650,000 tons per year, substantially boosting production capacity. This expansion is expected to positively impact HMS's consolidated EBITDA by a single-digit million euro figure within the same year.
HMS Bergbau's CEO, Dennis Schwindt, notes that the acquisition aligns with the company’s strategy of expanding beyond coal trading by investing in specific mining projects. The company anticipates enhancing profitability and securing customer supply needs globally through this venture.
