Hong Kong Unveils Development Plans for the Greater Bay Area
On September 16, Chief Executive John Lee outlined Hong Kong's First Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), introducing strategies for enhancing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and advancing green transformation. Key measures include promoting high-quality regional development, rule alignment, and fostering cross-boundary collaboration.
Efforts will focus on both "hard" and "soft" connectivity. Infrastructure projects like the Northern Link Project and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link aim to integrate rail networks by 2034 and 2035. A Task Force will address alignment of rules and mechanisms.
Hong Kong’s involvement will extend to major co-operation platforms and initiatives like Nansha’s development. The region also targets financial optimization and institutional innovation in collaboration with GBA cities.
Environmentally, Hong Kong is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Collaborations on renewable energy and sustainable aviation fuel production underline this goal. The plan also emphasizes cultural, sports, and tourism integration within the GBA.
