IMS Launches Japan's First Full-stack Neutral-atom Quantum Computer "Shunkai"

The Institute for Molecular Science (IMS) in Japan announced the operational debut of "Shunkai," the country's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer. Led by Professor Kenji Ohmori, the research team developed this advanced system, promising significant potential in the field of quantum computing.

Neutral-atom quantum computing offers room-temperature operation and the ability to easily scale qubits, addressing challenges like error correction. Shunkai is designed to handle 50 qubits, with plans to expand to 500. This project, part of the Ohmori Moonshot Project, is aimed at creating a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2031.

This initiative involves collaboration with companies such as Hitachi and Infleqtion for software and hardware integration, respectively. The IMS anticipates Shunkai's role in the development of error-correction technologies and practical applications in various sectors, integrating with its existing computing facilities for broader technological advancements.
