Global Mediation Summit Elevates Hong Kong's Mediation Hub Status
The inaugural Global Mediation Summit, hosted by the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), underscored Hong Kong's status as a global mediation hub. Held on May 8, 2026, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the event attracted over 400 leaders from 48 countries to discuss topics such as cross-cultural mediation and the development of a global mediation ecosystem.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, emphasized the city's commitment to becoming a global mediation capital, benefiting from its role in international finance and trade. Hong Kong maintains a unique position as the only common law jurisdiction in China and as the headquarters of IOMed. Paul Lam, the Secretary for Justice, outlined ongoing government support for IOMed, including the maintenance of its headquarters and promotion of IOMed mediation clauses in international agreements.
Since IOMed's inauguration, signatory states increased from 37 to 41 and contracting states from eight to 13. The organization aims to fill an institutional gap and provide mediation as a viable international dispute resolution method. At the summit, Professor Teresa Cheng announced the successful mediation of a maritime dispute and plans to establish a panel for commodities market disputes.
