On May 24, 2026, Dr. Lai Ka-ying became the first astronaut from Hong Kong to embark on a space mission, launching aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft. This monumental event marks a new chapter in Hong Kong's pursuit of innovation and technology as well as aligns with the national goals outlined in China's 15th Five-Year Plan.

Chief Executive John Lee commended Dr. Lai's achievement, seeing it as an evolution in the region's role from a supporter to an executor in China's space endeavors. The mission, significant not only for its timing but also for the inclusion of a Hong Kong payload expert, showcases the city's potential contribution to space exploration.

The Shenzhou-23 crew will stay aboard the Tiangong Space Station, conducting vital experiments, including the groundbreaking MUSICO project from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
