Michter's Distillery Unveils Barrel Strength Whiskey
Michter's Distillery is set to release its US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey in May 2026. This marks the first time the distillery offers this variant at barrel strength. The sour mash whiskey, known for its smoothness, initially gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s. The current iteration from Kentucky is well-regarded for its rich toffee and stonefruit notes.
Michter's Sour Mash gained international acclaim in 2019 by winning "Whisky of the Year" from The Whisky Exchange. The process, rooted in a 19th-century technique, ensures consistency in quality. Master Distiller Dan McKee emphasizes its rich taste despite the name, while Andrea Wilson highlights its elegance enhanced at barrel strength.
Retailing at $120 for a 750ml bottle, the whiskey offers an average proof of 111.5. This product aligns with Michter's legacy of producing high-quality American whiskeys, with limited production focused on peak maturity.
