MIT Lincoln Laboratory Acquires AIXTRON Hyperion Systems for Research
On June 23, 2026, AIXTRON SE announced that MIT Lincoln Laboratory has acquired two Hyperion 300 mm systems. Facilitated by the Massachusetts Governor’s Office and the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC), this acquisition aims to enhance research in gallium nitride (GaN) and two-dimensional (2D) materials. The systems will be dedicated to advancing GaN power electronics and 2D materials research, providing insight into next-generation technologies.
Located at MIT, these systems will primarily process 200 mm wafers but have the capability for 300 mm. This versatility supports research across multiple scales, aiding the transition from conceptual materials to mass production. One system will focus on GaN device development, while the other targets 2D materials for applications such as future transistors.
This effort is part of Massachusetts’ commitment to domestic semiconductor innovation. The NEMC’s SCALE Capital Program seeks to foster advancements in microelectronics and strengthen ties between academia, government, and industry.
