Neoen and RTE Partner for Grid Stabilization with Battery Innovation
Neoen has teamed up with RTE, signing a contract to trial an innovative grid forming function using the Breizh Big Battery (BBB). This project marks the first time France will incorporate such a function into its electricity transmission network. With a capacity of 92 MW/183 MWh, BBB is France's largest battery, located in Brittany.
Traditionally, French battery storage facilities operate in grid following mode, offering slower responses to supply and demand fluctuations. The trial aims to convert an inverter from grid following to grid forming mode, enhancing its ability to stabilize voltage and frequency autonomously.
This initiative, expected to launch in the second half of 2026, underscores Neoen's commitment to enhancing the French power grid's stability. Neoen's CEO, Guillaume Decaen, expressed pride in pioneering this project. RTE's Gabriel Bareux reiterated the project's significance in advancing grid stability technology in Europe.
