New Rules for Green Claims Challenge Renewable Energy Definitions
Starting September 27, Germany will enforce stricter regulations on environmental and sustainability claims in line with the European EmpCo Directive. These changes aim to ensure that labels such as "green" or "eco-friendly" are backed by verifiable evidence. This adds complexity to the renewable energy market, especially concerning what "sustainability" truly means beyond renewable origin.
Guarantees of Origin (GOs) document where renewable electricity is produced, yet do not fully capture the environmental impact. GreenStone Energy GmbH's brand VeganStrom emphasizes that renewable energy must also consider effects on animals and habitats.
VeganStrom focuses on solar and geothermal energy, avoiding wind, hydropower, and biomass, which can negatively affect wildlife. Collaborating with PETA Germany since its inception, the company aims to expand the conversation on sustainability to encompass animal protection.
