New Study Evaluates penKid for Kidney Reserve Assessment
A groundbreaking study published in Physiological Reports explores the use of Proenkephalin A 119-159 (penKid) for assessing kidney functional reserve (KFR). This method is designed to detect early kidney capacity loss, which might go unnoticed during routine tests. The study, involving 62 participants, found penKid to have a wider dynamic range than cystatin C and creatinine clearance after a protein stimulus.
Traditional methods like creatinine clearance are cumbersome, relying on blood and urine collection, and are not widely used in clinical practice. PenKid, however, demonstrated a faster response, peaking within two hours, and could differentiate between healthy and cardiac surgery patients. This suggests that penKid provides a consistent and rapid assessment, with no need for urine collection, making it a practical option in clinical settings.
The findings indicate that penKid could offer a simple and effective way to assess kidney reserve, potentially transforming stress testing from a research environment to everyday clinical use.
