OHB Italia Secures Contract for PRISMA Second Generation Satellite
The Italian Space Agency (ASI) has awarded OHB Italia a contract to develop the PRISMA Second Generation (PSG) Earth observation mission. Scheduled for launch by the end of 2031, the satellite aims to continue Italy's next-generation hyperspectral Earth observation capabilities.
OHB Italia, the prime contractor, will lead the development of the Earth observation system and satellite. The PSG mission promises enhanced observation performance, building on the success of the first PRISMA mission operating since 2019.
PRISMA Second Generation is designed to provide accurate data essential for environmental and climate monitoring, resource management, and disaster assessment. Partners in this project include Thales Alenia Space Italia for the platform and Leonardo for the hyperspectral instrument.
The contract reflects confidence in OHB's expertise, with previous successes like the EnMAP satellite for Germany. OHB is also involved in the European Copernicus mission CHIME, focusing on hyperspectral data for environmental monitoring.
