Bulgaria's Smooth Euro Transition Led by BORICA and OpenWay

BORICA AD has unveiled a detailed case study on Bulgaria's seamless transition to the euro on January 1, 2026. The national card and payment infrastructure operator partnered with technology providers, including OpenWay, for this major transformation. The transition involved complex coordination across banks, fintechs, and payment providers, ensuring uninterrupted payment operations.

In the first 48 hours, BORICA processed over 930,000 transactions worth nearly €42 million without any downtime. This feat was achieved through a synchronized update of issuing and acquiring systems. OpenWay's Way4 platform was instrumental in supporting these operations, maintaining stability and integrity under real-time transaction loads.

Additionally, the resilience of value-added services such as instant payments and digital identity was demonstrated. The changes were supported by updated regulations aligning with the Eurosystem's infrastructure, paving the way for instant euro transfers via SEPA.
