Pirelli, Pyrum, Synthos, and BASF Launch Circular Tyre Initiative

Pirelli, Pyrum, Synthos, and BASF have united to promote a circular economy within the European tyre sector. The collaborative "tyre-to-tyre" project leverages end-of-life tyres from Germany to produce recycled materials for new products. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on virgin raw materials.

The process uses a pyrolysis system developed by Pyrum to convert scrap tyres into two primary materials: recovered carbon black (rCB) and tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO). Pirelli reintegrates rCB into its production, while BASF utilizes TPO for chemical production. Synthos uses these outputs to produce synthetic rubber, completing the material loop.

This project showcases the potential of industrial ecosystems in achieving product circularity through collaboration and innovation. It highlights the transformation of waste into a valuable asset, emphasizing the importance of combined expertise for sustainable solutions.
