Thomas van Tonder Achieves World-First Crossing on Monkey Bars
Thomas van Tonder, a renowned Red Bull athlete from South Africa, has achieved a world-first by crossing the Bloukrans Bridge's arch using 600 monkey bars. The monumental feat saw the obstacle course racing world champion traverse over 280 meters at a dizzying height of 216 meters above the river. Van Tonder completed the course in 47 minutes and 37 seconds.
The Bloukrans Bridge arch, which connects the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, presented a challenging ascent, a flat section near its peak, and a descent where gravity influenced the speed. The construction team's ingenuity ensured that nothing needed to be permanently fixed to the bridge, highlighting the project's focus on safety and innovation.
Notably, this endeavor tested Van Tonder's grip strength and endurance beyond the usual obstacle race settings. His journey is available to watch on Red Bull TV, showcasing a unique blend of athletic skill and determination.
