Food & Beverage Manufacturers Aim to Scale AI Adoption

Rockwell Automation, Inc. recently released research pinpointing barriers to artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in the food and beverage industry. The study, part of the 2026 State of Smart Manufacturing Report, highlights the challenges in moving AI from pilot projects to enterprise-wide impact. Despite 90% of manufacturers using or planning to use AI, only 45% of collected data is effectively utilized, limiting AI’s full potential.

Greg Schmidt of Rockwell Automation emphasized the shift from questioning AI’s value to scaling successful AI pilots. Success requires connected data, integrated operations, and a clear link between AI projects and business goals. Effective AI strategies involve broader digital transformation efforts, improving data accessibility and aligning AI programs with key objectives.

Additionally, the importance of IT/OT integration and workforce readiness is highlighted. By 2030, AI-supported processes are expected to grow significantly, necessitating connected data. Workforce training and reskilling are also crucial, with 93% of manufacturers anticipating shifts in job roles due to smart manufacturing.
