Semaglutide Improves Quality of Life in Diabetes and Kidney Disease

At the 63rd ERA Congress in Glasgow, new findings from the FLOW trial reveal significant benefits of semaglutide for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This once-weekly treatment has been shown to enhance health-related quality of life for these individuals, equivalent to gaining eight additional healthy days annually.

The trial previously highlighted semaglutide's role in reducing major kidney disease events by 24% and lowering all-cause mortality by 20% in a median period of 3.4 years. Now, it is evident that the drug offers an improvement in daily well-being beyond standard clinical results.

Among the 3,533 participants in the FLOW trial, those receiving semaglutide maintained stable health utility scores, unlike the placebo group. Additionally, four out of five evaluated health areas, such as mobility and pain management, showed marked improvements.

Professor Johannes Mann noted the unexpected, far-reaching quality-of-life benefits observed with semaglutide, surpassing concerns about typical gastrointestinal side effects.
