Shanghai Electric Reaches Top 5 in Global Desalination Rankings
Shanghai Electric has advanced to 5th place globally for the capacity of newly constructed seawater desalination projects from 2024 to 2025. This marks a significant leap from its previous position, according to the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) and Global Water Intelligence (GWI) statistics.
Over the decade from 2016 to 2025, Shanghai Electric moved up to the 8th spot in cumulative project capacity globally. The company's rise in rankings is attributed to its extensive experience in both thermal and membrane desalination technologies.
Shanghai Electric is recognized for integrating thermal-based multi-effect distillation and membrane-based reverse osmosis technologies. Projects like the Hengyi PMB in Brunei and Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Co.'s Waste-Heat Desalination Project in China showcase its capability in delivering energy-efficient desalination solutions by utilizing industrial waste heat.
