IMO Supports Carbon Mineralisation Proposal by Shanghai Qiyao

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has given its preliminary support to a proposal from Shanghai Qiyao Technology Group Co., Ltd. This initiative aims to treat onboard carbon mineralisation as a method of permanent storage, transforming captured CO2 into stable minerals. These minerals, like calcium carbonate, can then be used in construction materials without carbon leakage.

The proposal was submitted with partners during the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). By converting CO2 through mineralisation, the method presents a commercially viable alternative to existing geological storage solutions, which often suffer from high costs.

Shanghai Qiyao has already demonstrated its capability by fitting an OCCS system on a container vessel and executing a pioneering ship-to-ship liquid CO2 transfer. They aim to revolutionize global shipping towards a low-carbon transition through partnerships and integrated solutions.
