Six Baltic Sea Cities Showcase Circular Economy Innovations

After three years, the Creative Circular Cities (CCC) project has revealed how six Baltic Sea cities are leveraging creative industries to foster a circular economy. These cities—Aarhus, Gdynia, Kiel, Riga, Tallinn, and Turku—conducted pilot projects that engaged numerous stakeholders and prompted strategic municipal changes. The findings were presented at the project's concluding conference in Kiel, Germany.

The pilots demonstrated varied initiatives: Gdynia launched a bulky waste campaign; Kiel hosted Repair & Upcycling Festivals; Riga introduced a community garden from reused materials; Tallinn engaged over 1,500 participants in circular activities; Turku ran a Circular Economy Carnival; and Aarhus connected designers and businesses through community events.

CCC's Policy Roadmap suggests strategies for addressing structural hurdles such as lack of collaboration between cultural and sustainability departments. It calls for integrating creative sectors into national plans and ensuring adequate funding. The EU Circular Economy Act is anticipated by the end of 2026.
