A*STAR and SMX Launch World's First Plastics Passport Program

A groundbreaking collaboration between Security Matters PLC (SMX) and Singapore’s A*STAR aims to revolutionize plastic recycling. This initiative introduces a national platform for tracking plastics from waste collection to recycled resin, supporting Singapore's Zero Waste Masterplan.

This partnership integrates SMX's molecular marking and blockchain technology with A*STAR's chemical and spectroscopic research capabilities. The result is a system that tracks plastics throughout their lifecycle, enhancing transparency and efficiency.

Phase 1 of the project will see the deployment of a "digital passport" for plastics, starting in 2026. This aims to trace 5,000 tonnes of plastic waste, facilitating compliance with future regulations and promoting circular economy.

Singapore currently incinerates most of its plastic waste, recycling only 6%. This partnership seeks to change that, potentially saving S$100 million annually through improved recycling practices.
