Turkish Cement Sector Calls for Adjustments in EU CBAM Implementation

Turkish cement producers are raising concerns about the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). They argue that the EU's default emission values overestimate actual emissions, raising carbon costs from €20 to €80 per ton of clinker. TÜRKÇİMENTO emphasizes the need for EU-aligned national monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) data to prevent unfair financial burdens.

With recent EU regulations coming into effect, TÜRKÇİMENTO warns that the current CBAM setup could serve as a non-tariff trade barrier. Volkan Bozay, CEO of TÜRKÇİMENTO, highlights issues with emission value verification, stating that the inaccurate defaults threaten Turkish exports' sustainability by inflating costs above market prices.

The Turkish cement sector points out its adherence to EU MRV standards since 2015, employing low-emission kilns and maintaining emissions well below default values. The discrepancy in reported emissions versus default values leads to unnecessary costs. TÜRKÇİMENTO calls for realistic corrections to prevent adverse impacts on both producers and EU consumers.
