Vancouver Island Biowaste: A Renewable Natural Gas Source

The Vancouver Island Capital Regional District has opened its first biomethane production facility in collaboration with FortisBC Energy Inc. and Waga Energy Canada. Located at the Hartland Waste Site, the facility, announced in 2020, uses WAGABOX® technology to convert waste into biomethane, significantly reducing the region's greenhouse gas emissions.
The CA$32 million project aims to produce up to 100 GWh of biomethane per year, mitigating 475,000 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 25 years. This biomethane is injected into the FortisBC gas network, contributing to provincial climate targets.
This milestone illustrates a successful partnership to strengthen renewable energy and gradually reduce dependence on fossil gas in British Columbia.
