Verallia Launches First Hybrid Furnace in Spain to Boost Sustainable Glass Production
Verallia, a leader in glass packaging, has inaugurated its first hybrid furnace at its Zaragoza plant in Spain. This marks a crucial step in the company's efforts to decarbonize and innovate its production processes. The new furnace is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 50%, with potential further reductions depending on the energy mix used.
The company's decarbonization plan aims for a 46.2% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to 2019, targeting a 90% reduction by 2040. To achieve this, Verallia is deploying various low-carbon technologies across its plants.
The Zaragoza furnace combines 70% renewable electricity with 30% natural gas or biofuel, enhancing operational flexibility. The site can produce diverse glass colors and aims to produce 1.3 million containers daily. This development strengthens Verallia's ability to serve the growing Spanish market.
