Zentiva Challenges EU Court Decision on Wastewater Directive

Zentiva Group has appealed an EU court decision regarding the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. This appeal, filed with the Court of Justice of the European Union, seeks to annul an earlier inadmissibility order for further judicial review.

The directive, implemented in 24 EU Member States, allegedly threatens medicine affordability and accessibility. Zentiva argues that the directive's current form risks shortages and increased costs, due to the extended producer responsibility scheme. This scheme requires pharmaceutical firms to bear the cost of removing micropollutants, violating the "polluter pays" principle.

Zentiva, a major producer of generic drugs, contends this imposes disproportionate costs on essential medicines, undermining healthcare affordability. CEO Steffen Saltofte emphasizes that environment protection and public health should align, highlighting that the directive offers limited environmental benefits while straining healthcare systems.
