Evolution Metals Could Stretch Scarce Magnet Materials Six to Eight Times Further (NASDAQ: EMAT)

WSW, NY, November 5th, 2026, FinanceWire

Heavy rare earths help magnets withstand heat. Evolution Metals says its manufacturing process sharply reduces the amount needed as it expands production in South Korea.

Evolution Metals & Technologies (NASDAQ: EMAT) is expanding its magnet business with a process it says can make scarce heavy rare earth materials go six to eight times further. The company reported on October 29 that its high-performance sintered magnets require approximately 0.5% heavy rare earths, compared with a historical 3% to 4%.

The commercial setting makes that difference worth examining. In a September 29 assessment, Argus Media's non-ferrous metals editor put European dysprosium oxide prices at $2,500 to $3,000 per kilogram, up 194% since the start of 2026. That is nearly triple the starting level. Dysprosium is one of the materials used to help magnets retain their performance at high temperatures.

For a manufacturer adding production lines, the amount of scarce material needed for each finished component can affect how far available supply reaches. Evolution Metals is pursuing that efficiency alongside its expansion in Pohang, South Korea.

Heat Creates a Materials Problem Inside the Motor

The magnets used in electric vehicles and demanding industrial equipment have to resist losing their magnetism as temperatures rise. Adding heavy rare earth elements such as dysprosium or terbium can improve that resistance. Research published in Materials Transactions explains the trade-off: conventional additions can also reduce magnetic strength, encouraging manufacturers to use these ingredients more selectively.

These magnets are made by heating pressed powders into a solid, a process called sintering. A magnet contains microscopic crystal grains. A process called grain boundary diffusion introduces heavy rare earths along the boundaries and forms thin enriched layers around those grains. Concentrating the material there improves resistance to demagnetization while using relatively small amounts. The engineering task is to put the ingredient where it contributes most to performance.

That principle has a research history beyond any one company. Japan's National Institute for Materials Science describes a separate two-step diffusion experiment that achieved comparable resistance to demagnetization with roughly one-tenth the dysprosium content of conventional magnets. It illustrates why manufacturers pursue this approach; Evolution's commercial figures come from its own disclosures.

Dividing Evolution's historical 3% to 4% requirement by its stated 0.5% gives a ratio of six to eight. That arithmetic explains the company's six-to-eightfold figure. The practical opportunity is more finished product from a given supply of those ingredients.

The potential benefit extends to production planning. A factory that needs fewer kilograms for the same finished output may have more flexibility when a shipment is delayed or a supplier limits allocations. Lower material intensity could also reduce exposure to price increases in those ingredients, although the effect on overall production costs depends on the rest of the manufacturing process.

Evolution's Product Mix Makes Heat Resistance Commercially Relevant

The company has outlined four super-high-temperature grades rated to 150 degrees Celsius. Management estimates that the market categories represented by those grades account for approximately 49% of global sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnet revenue on 30% of volume. Applications include electric-vehicle motors, wind generators and aerospace equipment.

Those estimates describe the markets addressed by the products. They help explain why material efficiency could be valuable: Evolution is developing output for applications where performance under heat helps determine which magnet a customer can use.

Its existing production also gives that effort a commercial starting point. In its October 28 Army response, Evolution identified N42SH, a high-temperature grade already in commercial production and customer-qualified in Pohang. The submission proposed further qualification against the Army's specific drone-motor requirements.

The Next Test Is Larger Volumes From the Same Factory

Evolution confirmed that all 57 containers of additional ULVAC equipment had reached Pohang on October 28. Following installation and commissioning, the expansion targets approximately 10,000 metric tons of annual magnet capacity, including approximately 6,000 tons of high-performance sintered magnets, from a total base near 1,000 tons.

The June-quarter filing identified additional financing needs and substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern, making working capital part of the execution task alongside a factory that already sells customer-qualified magnets.

Scarce ingredients make manufacturing efficiency part of supply security. Evolution plans an operational showcase at Pohang on December 17. As additional machines enter service, consistent output and customer shipments could show how effectively its materials technology translates into a larger commercial business.
