EXXE & CO Inaugurates Its New Miren Facility and Invests in Pellet Packaging Innovation

A new facility with a production capacity of approximately 60,000 tonnes per year and two years of research into paper packaging: in Miren, EXXE & CO enters a new phase of its industrial development.

EXXE & CO is strengthening its production infrastructure with a new packaging facility in Miren, Slovenia. As operations get underway, the facility is in the final stages of fine-tuning and testing, while the first deliveries to large-scale retail chains are already scheduled.

The project combines production capacity with packaging innovation. The facility occupies a site of approximately 6,000 m², complemented by an additional 6,000 m² of outdoor space, and is designed to reach a capacity of approximately 60,000 tonnes per year. The investment therefore combines increased operational capacity with research into packaging solutions designed to meet industrial requirements and evolving expectations around sustainability.

EXXE & CO: The New Miren Facility Expands Industrial Capacity

The new site represents one of the company's most significant recent investments. Its planned capacity reflects both the industrial scale of the project and the role Miren is expected to play in EXXE & CO's operations.

Among the activities planned at the new facility is the packaging of the new ARBORA brand, a company-owned brand currently undergoing registration at European level. The project therefore strengthens EXXE & CO's production capacity while bringing industrial development and packaging innovation together within the same growth strategy.

Miren therefore represents more than a simple increase in production capacity.

Two Years of Research to Innovate Pellet Packaging

One of the project's most distinctive elements is its pellet packaging. EXXE & CO has spent approximately two years developing a paper bag featuring a transparent window that allows consumers to see the pellets inside. One of the main technical challenges was integrating this transparent window while keeping the packaging 100% recyclable and identified with the PAP 22 code.

A seemingly simple feature that, in practice, involves several technical complexities.

“Pellet consumers are accustomed to seeing the product inside the packaging, and its colour also contributes to their perception of quality. The challenge was therefore to develop a paper-based solution that preserved the visibility of the pellets while also being sufficiently durable and suitable for use on an industrial scale,” explains Antonio Bubbo of EXXE & CO.

The project therefore addresses two different requirements: maintaining the visual connection between the consumer and the product while, at the same time, developing packaging suitable for industrial production.

A Transparent Window Combining Paper Packaging with Product Visibility

The research focused on combining several requirements: the use of paper, pellet visibility, the durability of the window, the ability to support the 15 kg of product contained in the bag, and compatibility with industrial packaging processes.

Paper's greater sensitivity to moisture adds a further layer of complexity. The packaging must maintain the characteristics required to protect the product during handling, storage, and distribution before it reaches the consumer.

These conditions make material selection and packaging design an integral part of the production process rather than a purely aesthetic decision. The objective is not simply to create packaging that is more sustainable in theory, but to develop a technically viable solution capable of moving from experimentation to large-scale production.

Sustainable Packaging: From Experimentation to Industrial Scale

Through the Miren project, EXXE & CO aims to contribute to the evolution of the pellet sector by developing more sustainable packaging solutions with a lower environmental impact.

The distinctive element lies not simply in the use of paper. The industrial challenge is to integrate this type of packaging into a facility designed for a capacity of approximately 60,000 tonnes per year, while maintaining a balance between sustainability, technical performance and production efficiency.

This is where industrial scalability plays a central role. After approximately two years of research and development, the objective is to transfer the solution into a production environment capable of handling significant volumes.

Packaging innovation thus becomes part of the company's industrial strategy rather than an isolated sustainability initiative.

Miren Integrates Production Capacity, Packaging and Large-Scale Retail

The new facility strengthens EXXE & CO's ability to manage pellet packaging on an industrial scale and meet the volumes required by the market and large-scale retail sector.

The first deliveries are already scheduled for large-scale retail, marking the transition from the development phase to operations and representing one of the first tangible results of the new production structure.

Miren therefore brings together production capacity, research and development, and packaging innovation within a single project.
