SambaSafety Releases 2026 Telematics Report Highlighting Gaps in Fleet Data Sharing

Denver, CO, USA, October 14th, 2026, FinanceWire

Fourth annual report examines how insurers, brokers, and fleets can translate telematics data into clearer value and risk management support.

SambaSafety, a provider of driver risk management solutions, has released its fourth annual Telematics Report, examining how fleets, insurers, and insurance brokers use and share telematics data. The report draws on responses from 740 fleet, insurance, and brokerage professionals and identifies gaps between what insurance partners believe prevents data sharing and what fleets say they need in return.

Among fleets that do not share telematics data with an insurance partner, 64% say they have never been asked to do so. The findings also show growing demand for a clear explanation of how sharing data can support better insurance pricing and risk management.

Businesses Provide Telematics Data When the Value Is Clear

More than a third of fleets provide telematics data to an insurer or insurance broker, according to SambaSafety’s research. Among transportation fleets, the share providing telematics data to insurers rose from 29% in 2025 to 55% in 2026.

“After four years of studying telematics adoption and insurer-fleet relationships, one pattern continues to stand out: industry perceptions often lag behind fleet reality. Across our research and through conversations with customers and partners, we’ve consistently found that fleets are more open to sharing data than insurers and brokers often assume,” said Ashley Newbill, VP of Product Marketing at SambaSafety.

“What matters most isn’t simply asking for information. It’s clearly communicating how that information will be used and the value fleets can expect in return. The organizations that are most successful in these conversations focus on creating a meaningful exchange of value, not simply collecting more data.”

Reported Barriers to Data Sharing

The percentage of fleets that do not share telematics data and say they were never asked has fallen from 79% in 2025 to 64% in 2026, suggesting that more insurance partners are starting these conversations.

However, 31% of fleets that do not provide telematics data to an insurance partner see insufficient value in doing so, up from 13% the previous year.

More than half of insurance brokers (52%) say client distrust of the insurance industry is a barrier to providing telematics data, while 49% cite driver privacy as a frequent objection. Businesses report far less concern. Only 5% of fleets cite distrust of the insurance industry, while 15% point to privacy or driver-monitoring concerns.

Factors Influencing Telematics Data Sharing

Among fleets that provide telematics data to an insurance partner, 65% cite better rates and pricing as a leading motivation, while 61% point to risk-management support.

Among all fleets surveyed, 60% say a lower insurance premium would encourage them to provide telematics data, while 53% point to a lower deductible.

Nearly half of fleets (46%) say they would provide telematics data in exchange for access to a rewards-based program designed to reduce risky driving behaviors such as speeding or distraction. Another 45% would provide information to support a liability claim.
