Tarana Wireless and Itellum Demonstrate Live 1 Gbps Service, Paving the Way for Nationwide FWA in Costa Rica

Hosted by the Costa Rican Superintendence of Telecommunications (SUTEL), this year’s conference brought together telecommunications ministers, regulators, and industry leaders from across Latin America to address topics including 5G expansion, 6G planning, satellite licensing, and — central to today’s demonstration — spectrum strategies for closing the region’s connectivity gaps.

SUTEL took a major step forward for wireless broadband in June 2026, publishing two resolutions that establish how Standard Power devices controlled by Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) systems can operate in the 6 GHz band. Resolution RCS-138-2026 sets out the homologation requirements for equipment operating under Standard Power conditions in that band, while a companion resolution, RCS-137-2026, governs the AFC database administrators that manage access to the band. Together, these rulings open the door for outdoor, higher-power FWA deployments that were not viable under Costa Rica’s earlier Low Power Indoor rules — clearing the regulatory path for Tarana to deploy its G1 platform to deliver broadband services of up to 1 Gbps across the country. The rulings also allowed Tarana and Itellum to showcase the live 1 Gbps FWA demonstration today at the conference.

The 6 GHz standard power framework allows operators to use higher transmit power levels than under low-power indoor rules, significantly extending range and capacity for outdoor point-to-multipoint FWA networks. Tarana’s G1 platform is designed to exploit this additional spectrum to deliver fiber-like speeds over wireless links, offering an efficient path to gigabit broadband without the time and cost of trenching fiber.
